Root Canal Therapy

Root Canal Therapy to Save Teeth and Restore Comfort

When you experience severe dental discomfort, the cause may be an infection. When decay and bacteria reach the inner chamber of a tooth, also known as the pulp, the nerves inside respond painfully to the resulting inflammation.

When a tooth is infected, the only procedure available besides extraction is root canal therapy (RCT). Bayside Dental & Orthodontics provides root canal therapy to repair infected teeth, alleviate pain, and restore your smile.

What is Root Canal Therapy?

Endodontics is the field of dentistry that deals with the interior of the tooth. An endodontist or specially-trained dentist will make a small opening at the top of the tooth and carefully remove the infected portion of the pulp.

The hollowed chambers of the tooth are cleared of any remaining debris and filled with a bio-compatible material to restore strength. Once treated, a prosthetic crown is crafted and placed to replicate and protect the tooth.

Healthier and Less Costly than Extraction in the Long Run

It’s important to see us at the first sign of trouble. Never delay treatment for any dental emergency.

RCT is designed to preserve teeth. Sometimes a tooth is too far gone to be saved, and in that case, extraction is the only alternative.

When you lose a tooth, you lose some chewing function and are left with a gap in your smile. Other teeth can shift, and if more are lost or extracted, you can end up with a shrunken jaw from resorption.

Another term for rapid bone loss, resorption occurs when the jaw bone fails to receive stimulation from all the missing tooth roots. Dental implants replace the whole tooth, including the roots, to prevent bone loss. This procedure may be recommended after extraction.
