At-home oral hygiene

It is extremely important that you brush and floss a minimum of two times a day to remove dental plaque. If allowed to collect and build up, it can produce tartar and acid-producing bacteria that are responsible for tooth decay and gum disease.

Daily tooth cleaning for children should begin the instant the first tooth erupts. It is recommended that you visit a pediatric dentist at this time, or within the first 12 months of age, in order to develop a comprehensive oral health care program for your kid.

Fluoride Use

Fluoride is contained in most toothpastes and helps to strengthen tooth enamel and prevent decay. Besides the use of fluoride, mouth rinses, and toothpastes at home, there are also fluoride treatments provided in a dental office, with consideration of access to public fluoridated water.

Diet

Maintaining a balanced diet is important for your dental and overall health. Foods that are high in carbohydrates and sugars harm your body, including your teeth, as they feed the bacteria in your mouth that create dental plaque. Inadequate calcium in your diet is also risky, as it increases the risk of developing gum disease and jaw deterioration.

Regular dental visits

Routine dental checkups are important for early detection of teeth and teeth-related problems before they cause significant damage. Dental check-ups should be conducted every six months, and may include dental cleaning, cancer screenings, oral health management, and patient education, among others.

Periodontal teeth scaling is a big part of every hygiene appointment. Our hygienist will reduce buildup of plaque, tartar and bacteria that may be living on your teeth. We use two methods at Bayside Dental & Orthodontics:

1. using a traditional hand scaling tool or
2. using an ultrasonic water scaling device.

The type of tool used depends on your individual circumstance.

As part of each hygiene and scaling appointment, we provide complete Oral Cancer Detection. Early detection is vital in combating the disease; additional screening may be pursued as part of your yearly hygiene schedule.
